For many years traditional video surveillance and security systems have relied on analog based Closed Circuit Cable Television (CCTV) cameras. These cameras require expensive coaxial cabling to connect their output signal back to a central control center. These types of cameras also require a power supply which adds to their price and installation expense. In 1996, AXIS introduced the IP security camera. These cameras utilize the TCP/IP protocol suite to communicate their signals over a conventional IP network. Since their introduction, IP security cameras have enjoyed huge market growth in the surveillance and security industry.

IP Security Camera
IP security cameras are also referred to as network cameras. If you want to network multiple cameras, it is a simple and relatively inexpensive process. IP cameras are easily connected to a switch or router using standard Category-5 or Category 5e Ethernet cabling which is inexpensive and allows for data speeds up to 100 megabits per second. This is a big advantage if you or I wish to install a security system that will have high resolution video output. Many cameras support the Power over Ethernet capability which eliminates the need to run a second power cable to the camera. This greatly reduces cabling costs and complexities.
For the home owner who wishes to install a video security system, there are wireless IP security camera systems that are easy to install and configure. Many of these cameras have a robust web interface which allows you to easily manage and administer the cameras. IP security camera systems can be integrated into existing business networks and managed with central console software or remote access applications. This means that your video security system can be accessed from anywhere in the world if you wish. IP security cameras come with many options and capabilities like low light, infrared for night vision, and onboard pan, tilt, and zoom capabilities. Many cameras include the ability for motion detection, automatic area scans, intrusion detection and event monitoring.
There are presently two formalized standards being used by camera vendors. It appears that there will soon be a dominant standard that will emerge. This is good news for the consumer as when a standard is ratified, prices will fall as the demand rises.
